Frugal Fridays – Valentine’s Day
February 13, 2009

So, tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. Ever been interested in the history of Valentine’s Day? Well, apparently you need to visit The History of Valentine’s Day. Find all you ever wanted to know. For free.
What? That doesn’t count as a Frugal Friday tip? Yeah, I guess not. Here are some (better) ideas.
Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday, it opens up a lot of possibilities. One that I am becoming more fond of is celebrating the whole family and the love in a family. Chances are your kids will be home for the day, try spending the day with them. Start your day with pancakes, poured into heart shaped cookie cutters (make sure they’re metal!). Or draw a heart on their pancakes with syrup. Or put the fruit topping on in a heart shape.
Some activities to do through the day that cost little to nothing:
- talk about what Valentine’s day means to you and your family
- watch a few videos about some of the usual ways we celebrate the day – learn how chocolate is made, the history of the valentine, or some basic history of Valentine’s day
- write a love letter to your children, tell them what they mean to you, help them write their own love letter to you or the other parent in their lives – teaching kids to find the things we love and appreciate about someone and how to communicate those things to the other person is a valuable relationship skill
- do a Valentine’s day craft – Make and Takes has some great resources for Valentine’s day crafts
Teach your children that Valentine’s day isn’t about spending the most money, it is about celebrating the loved ones in your life.
